Product description

The Z-Claw is a floating pencil bait built for classic walk-the-dog fishing on top of the water. Its slim, weighted body sits level at rest and snaps side to side with sharp rod twitches, throwing a tight zigzag that draws bass up from cover without diving under the surface.

Available in 86mm/13g and 100mm/20g sizes, it covers everything from calm coves to windier main lake points. Fish it over grass flats, around laydowns, and near schooling baitfish for largemouth and smallmouth bass, plus pike where they share water. The dressed treble hooks add extra hookup security on the strike.

How to fish it

  1. Cast past visible cover or baitfish activity and let the lure sit until rings disappear.
  2. Work the rod tip down and to the side with short, steady twitches to make the bait walk.
  3. Pause briefly between twitch sequences, especially near cover, to trigger reaction strikes.
  4. Speed up the cadence in open water and slow it down tight to structure or in cooler water.

Frequently asked

The 86mm/13g is easier to walk on light gear and works well for finesse days, while the 100mm/20g casts farther and suits bigger bass or windier conditions.

Pick brighter, higher-contrast patterns for stained water so bass can find the bait, and switch to more natural, translucent finishes in clear water to avoid spooking fish.

A medium-power spinning or baitcast rod with 10-15 lb monofilament or braid to a fluorocarbon leader gives good walking action and enough give on the strike.

Early morning and evening during warmer months are prime, especially around baitfish schools, calm banks, and grass edges when bass are actively feeding near the surface.
