The Sayoris Needle Pencil is a slim, weighted sinking bait built for long casts and fast coverage of open water. Its narrow profile mimics a fleeing baitfish, and the through-wire construction with a heavy tail hook keeps it stable on the retrieve or on the fall. Available in 140mm and 180mm sizes, it casts well into wind and covers water quickly when bass are scattered or chasing bait on the surface.

Worked with a straight retrieve it swims with a tight wobble, while a twitch-pause cadence turns it into a darting jerkbait that triggers reaction strikes. The sinking design lets you fish it subsurface or let it flutter down on pauses, making it useful for largemouth and smallmouth holding just under the surface or suspended over structure.

How to fish it

  1. Cast well past the target zone and let the bait settle for a second before starting your retrieve.
  2. Use a steady, moderate retrieve for a swimming wobble when bass are actively feeding.
  3. Switch to a twitch-pause cadence to make the bait dart and flutter down, imitating a dying baitfish.
  4. Fish it around baitfish schools, points, and open flats where bass are chasing prey near the surface.

Frequently asked

The 140mm is easier to cast on lighter gear and works well for finesse presentations, while the 180mm pushes more water and casts farther, good for covering larger areas or targeting bigger fish.

Blue and silver patterns like this one work best in clear to lightly stained water where bass key in on natural baitfish flash. In stained water, brighter or more contrasted patterns show up better.

A medium to medium-heavy spinning or baitcasting rod with 10 to 17 lb fluorocarbon or braid with a fluorocarbon leader gives good casting distance and control for working the bait.

It works for both. Largemouth respond well to the twitch-pause action around baitfish, while smallmouth often hit it on a steadier retrieve in open water or over deeper structure.
