The Don Belone is a long, slender sinking pencil built for distance casting and a tight, subtle walk-the-dog action just under the surface. Its slim profile and balanced weight let it cut through wind easily, making it a strong choice for covering open water fast when bass are scattered or schooling on baitfish.

On the retrieve it rolls and darts with a natural side-to-side wobble that mimics a fleeing baitfish. Work it with a twitch-pause cadence over points, flats, and open basin areas where largemouth and smallmouth chase shad or herring near the surface. It also casts well enough to reach breaking fish before they move off.

How to fish it

  1. Cast as far as possible to reach open water or schooling fish before they move.
  2. Let the bait settle for a second or two to reach its running depth.
  3. Use a twitch-pause retrieve, snapping the rod tip to make the pencil dart and roll.
  4. Work it over points, flats, and baitfish schools, pausing longer when fish are following but not committing.

Frequently asked

Yes. Its long-casting profile and subtle walking action work well for both species, especially when bass are chasing baitfish in open water or along points.

Choose lighter, more translucent patterns in clear water so the profile looks natural, and switch to bolder, higher-contrast patterns in stained or low-light conditions so bass can track the bait.

A medium-heavy spinning or baitcasting rod with 12 to 20 lb fluorocarbon or braid with a fluorocarbon leader gives good casting distance and control for working the twitch-pause action.

It shines in open water during spring and fall when bass are schooling on baitfish near the surface, and it also works well for covering large flats in summer.
