The Barre T. Minnow is a soft paddle tail swimbait built on a molded jig head with a built-in belly weight and a strong exposed hook, so it is ready to fish straight out of the bag. The tapered profile and thin paddle tail kick hard on the fall and on a straight retrieve, throwing off flash and vibration that mimics a fleeing baitfish. The glitter-flecked, translucent body reads natural in clear to lightly stained water and holds up well against repeated bass strikes.

This bait covers a lot of water fast and works equally well swum just under the surface or hopped along bottom. It shines around main lake points, submerged grass edges, and open flats where largemouth and smallmouth are keyed on shad or shiners. Because the head shape and weight are built in, it casts far on spinning or baitcasting gear and stays running true without added hardware.

How to fish it

  1. Cast past the target area and let the bait sink to the desired depth before starting your retrieve.
  2. Use a steady straight retrieve to let the paddle tail do the work and trigger reaction strikes.
  3. Slow down and add occasional pauses when fish are following but not committing.
  4. Switch to a lift-and-drop retrieve near bottom structure to imitate an injured baitfish.

Frequently asked

A mid-weight size in the 25 to 40g range is a good all-around choice for typical lake and reservoir largemouth. Go lighter for finesse presentations in clear water and heavier when you need long casts or deeper coverage.

Lighter, more translucent patterns with fine glitter work best in clear water, while darker or more solid patterns show up better when the water has some stain or color.

A medium to medium-heavy casting or spinning rod with 10 to 17 lb fluorocarbon or braid to fluorocarbon leader handles most sizes well and gives you good hook-setting power.

It performs well in open water seasons when bass are actively chasing baitfish, especially spring through fall around points, flats, and grass lines.
