Wacky Rig

A wacky rig is a simple soft plastic stick bait hooked through the middle instead of the head. This lets both ends of the bait hang freely and flutter as it sinks, creating a shimmy that bass find hard to ignore. It works with a bare hook or a weighted wacky hook, and needs no other hardware.

Anglers use this rig for slow, subtle presentations around docks, laydowns, and grass edges where bass want a natural, unhurried look. Cast it out, let it fall on a slack line, and watch or feel for the bite on the drop. It shines in clear water and pressured lakes where bigger, louder baits get ignored. Most anglers pair it with finesse-style stick baits from a soft-plastics lineup for the right action and durability.

Use a short shank hook and thread it through the middle so the bait balances evenly on both sides. If the bait spins or dives to one side, adjust hook placement slightly until the fall looks straight and even on both ends.

  • Best around docks, brush piles, and grass lines
  • Works weightless for a slow fall or with light weight for deeper water
  • Pairs well with spinning gear and light fluorocarbon or braid to fluoro leader
