Palomar Knot

The Palomar knot is one of the easiest ways to tie your line straight to a hook, lure, or swivel. You double the line, pass the loop through the eye, tie an overhand knot with the loop, then slip the loop over the whole lure and cinch it down. It holds well because the line doubles back on itself, which spreads out the pressure instead of putting all the strain on one strand.

Anglers like it because it keeps most of its strength even with slick lines like braid, which can slip out of weaker knots. It works fine with fluorocarbon and monofilament too, so it is a good default knot for tying on tackle like jigs, swivels, and hooks without needing to learn several different knots.

  • Wet the line before you pull it tight, this cuts down on friction and keeps the knot from weakening.
  • Pull slowly and evenly so the wraps stack neatly instead of crossing over each other.
  • Trim the tag end close, but leave a small stub so it cannot slip back through.
