Monofilament

Monofilament is a single strand nylon fishing line known for its stretch, buoyancy, and low cost. It floats on the surface, which makes it a natural choice for topwater baits where you want the lure to sit high and walk or pop without extra weight pulling it down.

The stretch in monofilament works as a shock absorber. It forgives hook sets and hard runs from bass, which helps beginners avoid pulled hooks or snapped lines. This same stretch means less sensitivity than fluorocarbon or braid, so bites can be harder to feel, especially at longer distances or deeper depths. Anglers often pair mono with topwater lures and other reaction baits fished on slack line, where feel matters less and buoyancy helps.

Monofilament also absorbs water over time and breaks down faster under sun exposure than other line types. A practical tip: spool fresh mono every few months if you fish often, and store rods out of direct sunlight to extend line life.

  • Floats, good for topwater presentations
  • Stretches, forgiving on hook sets
  • Affordable and easy to handle
  • Loses strength with UV exposure and age
