Lipless Crankbait
A lipless crankbait is a flat, thin bait with no diving lip, usually made of hard plastic with rattles inside. It sinks on a slack line, so anglers can count it down to any depth before starting the retrieve. The tight, fast wobble it gives off on a straight retrieve makes it one of the best search baits for covering water and finding active bass.
Most anglers fish it around grass flats, drop-offs, and points, especially in cold water or during the fall when bass are chasing shad. Because it sinks, it also works well for yo-yoing along the bottom or ripping it through the top of submerged grass to trigger reaction strikes. It pairs well with other lipless vibration baits in a rotation when fish want a tighter or looser wobble.
A practical tip: if the bait keeps snagging in grass, speed up the retrieve slightly or rip it free with a short snap of the rod tip instead of stopping. Stopping usually buries the hooks deeper in the vegetation.
- Sinks on slack line, allowing depth control by count
- Best fished with a steady, fast retrieve
- Great for locating active fish quickly
