Chatterbait
A chatterbait is a jig with a flat metal blade attached to the head. The blade knocks against the jig on every turn of the handle, sending out a tight vibration and a hunting side-to-side wobble. That thump is strong enough to call fish out of thick grass, stained water, or low light when a normal jig would go unnoticed.
Most anglers pair it with a soft plastic trailer, often a paddle tail or a craw, and fish it on a steady retrieve just fast enough to feel the blade knocking. It shines around grass edges, rip-rap, and dirty water where bass hunt by feel and vibration more than sight. Ripping it free when it hangs on grass often triggers a reaction strike right after it clears.
- Slow-roll it through cold or clear water, burn it faster in warm, dirty water.
- Match trailer color to water clarity, dark in stained water, natural in clear water.
- Use a stiff rod so you can feel the blade thump and rip it through grass.
