The squarebill is the great shallow-water search bait. That flat, square lip makes it deflect violently off anything it touches, rock, riprap, laydowns, dock posts, and it is that erratic ricochet, not a perfect retrieve, that draws the reaction strike from a bass sitting tight to cover.

How to fish it
- Target shallow cover: rock, riprap, laydowns, dock pilings, and stump flats in 1 to 5 feet of water.
- Reel steady and let it deflect. A medium pace is all you need; when it bangs off cover and darts sideways, that is the trigger.
- Pause on contact. The instant it deflects, hesitate for a beat; most bites come on that momentary stall.
- Match the gear: 7 ft medium-heavy cranking rod, moderate action, 6.3:1 reel, 12 to 15 lb fluorocarbon.
- Pick your window: prespawn through fall, water 50 to 75 F, stained to muddy water is prime.
