Squarebill Crankbait
The squarebill is the great shallow-water search bait. That flat, square lip makes it deflect violently off anything it touches, rock, riprap, laydowns, dock posts, and it is that erratic ricochet, not a perfect retrieve, that draws the reaction strike from a bass sitting tight to cover.
This one runs a short, fat 1.5 profile with a wide, hunting wobble at slow-to-medium speeds and a fast recovery after each deflection. Floating buoyancy backs it out of snags, so you can crash it into the nastiest cover and keep fishing.
Eight color patterns cover the range: craw and chartreuse tones for stained water, natural shad and bluegill for clear.

How to fish it
- Target shallow cover: rock, riprap, laydowns, dock pilings, and stump flats in 1 to 5 feet of water.
- Reel steady and let it deflect. A medium pace is all you need; when it bangs off cover and darts sideways, that is the trigger.
- Pause on contact. The instant it deflects, hesitate for a beat; most bites come on that momentary stall.
- Match the gear: 7 ft medium-heavy cranking rod, moderate action, 6.3:1 reel, 12 to 15 lb fluorocarbon.
- Pick your window: prespawn through fall, water 50 to 75 F, stained to muddy water is prime.
Frequently asked
On 12 to 15 lb fluorocarbon it runs about 3 to 5 feet, deflecting off cover the whole way, which is where the reaction bites come from. Lighter line gets you slightly deeper.
A 7-foot medium-heavy cranking rod with a moderate action, a 6.3:1 reel, and 12 to 15 lb fluorocarbon is the classic squarebill setup. The softer tip keeps fish pinned on the trebles.
One of the easiest big-fish baits there is. Cast past cover, reel at a steady medium pace, and let it deflect. No complicated cadence required.
Red craw and chartreuse patterns shine in stained to muddy water. Switch to natural shad and bluegill tones when the water clears up.
